QGIS Essentials training introduces participants to the core features and functionalities of the open-source QGIS software. The course covers fundamental GIS concepts, such as working with spatial data, creating maps, and performing basic geospatial analysis. Participants learn to navigate the QGIS interface, manage vector and raster data, and create visually appealing map layouts. Hands-on exercises focus on tasks like attribute editing, querying data, and utilizing geoprocessing tools. By the end of the training, attendees will have the skills to effectively use QGIS for mapping and basic spatial analysis in various applications.
Introduction to QGIS and Basic GIS Concepts Getting Started with QGIS Overview of QGIS interface and navigation. Customizing QGIS settings and preferences. Understanding layers, map canvas, and toolbars. Importing and managing spatial data (shapefiles, GeoJSON, CSV, etc.). Vector Data Management Working with vector layers: Points, lines, and polygons. Editing vector data and creating new features. Attribute table management and querying. Performing spatial selections and attribute queries. Hands-On Exercises Basic Mapping and Symbology Customizing map display with symbology and color schemes. Labeling vector features based on attributes. Setting up map styles for effective visualization. Introduction to coordinate reference systems (CRS) and projections. Hands-On Exercises Spatial Analysis and Advanced Mapping Working with Raster Data Introduction to raster data: Understanding types and formats. Managing raster layers: Displaying and styling raster data. Raster analysis: Calculating statistics and performing basic raster operations. Reprojecting raster data to a different CRS. Hands-On Exercises Spatial Analysis in QGIS Buffer analysis: Creating buffer zones around features. Intersecting and union operations with vector layers. Spatial queries and spatial joins to link data. Performing proximity analysis and distance calculations. Hands-On Exercises Advanced Map Design and Layout Setting up a print layout: Creating professional maps. Adding map elements (legend, scale bar, north arrow). Customizing map print settings and export options. Best practices for cartographic design and map composition. Hands-On Exercises
