Basic understanding of engineering principles (mechanical, chemical, or process)
Familiarity with Oil & Gas / process plant operations is helpful but not mandatory
Ability to understand P&IDs and basic process flow diagrams (recommended)
No prior experience with PSV or flare design software is required

Suitable for beginners to early-career professionals in process safety and plant engineering.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Recognize common overpressure causes in Oil & Gas facilities
Select appropriate pressure relief devices for typical scenarios
Understand PSV sizing concepts, back pressure effects, and installation practices
Explain the design philosophy of flare systems and their role in emergency situations
Link risk assessment studies (HAZOP/LOPA) to relief and flare system design
Improve safety decision-making related to pressure protection and emergency relief

After completing this course, participants will gain the ability to:

Identify process safety hazards and overpressure scenarios
Understand and apply risk management techniques such as HAZOP and LOPA
Explain the function, types, and operation of PSVs
Interpret key API 520 / API 521 requirements for relief and flare systems
Understand flare system components, configuration, and safety considerations
Integrate PSV and flare systems with overall plant risk reduction strategies
Communicate effectively with process safety, operations, and HSE teams

Participant understanding may be evaluated through quizzes, case discussions, or short assessments covering:

Fundamentals of process safety and risk management
Hazard identification and overpressure scenarios
Risk assessment methods (HAZOP, LOPA, risk matrix)
Types, components, and working principles of PSVs
PSV design concepts: set pressure, accumulation, back pressure
Basics of API 520 / API 521 requirements
Flare system components and operational philosophy
Safety and environmental considerations in flare systems
Practical Oil & Gas–based case studies

ProgNXT Certificate of Completion will be awarded to participants who complete the course and pass the evaluations.
